From this satellite image you can see the basic lay of the land on Greenstone Creek. Below are aerial photos of Greenstone that show more detail. Some of the oldest tailings are overgrown with Alders and brush and even trees as this creek was first mined eighty years ago however there are many large clear areas to detect in. The settling ponds and airstrip seen at the upper left of the image are Midnight Creek. The road on the right side of the image is the Ruby - Poorman Highway. |

Greenstone Creek Gold was first discovered in the winter of 1912-13. The head of Greenstone Creek was mined by open cut methods in 1914. A bucket line dredge was constructed on Greenstone Creek by the Innoko Dredging Company in 1915. It operated there in 1916 and 1917. Mining took place on over two miles of the creek from near the confluence of Greenstone Gulch down stream. The lower 800 feet of Greenstone Gulch was also dredged. In two years of operation $500,000 in gold was recovered by the dredge from Greenstone Creek (Source P 153).In the winter of 1920-21 this dredge was dissembled and freighted from Greenstone to Gains Creek, near McGrath, where it began operations during 1923. |
